Turn your small Bayto pool into a spa during winter

2025/12/11
Transforming a small pool into an outdoor spa for the winter is a bit like refusing to pack summer away in the garage. Instead of seeing your pool as a “closed” space as soon as the cold sets in, you switch it into cocooning mode: warm water, soothing lights, muscle relaxation, and the joy of soaking even while the snow falls. It’s a growing trend in Quebec, because it allows you to enjoy your backyard 12 months a year—without needing to install a separate spa.
And that’s perfect, because at Bayto Pools, our precast concrete pools are designed so you can turn your pool into a spa during winter!
Why turn your pool into a spa in winter?
A small pool already has several advantages: it heats up faster, requires fewer maintenance products, and fits easily into your outdoor layout. In winter, these same benefits become your greatest allies. Since the water volume is smaller, it’s much easier (and more economical) to maintain a pleasant temperature. You get the comfort of a spa without giving up the swimming space you enjoy in summer.
Soaking in warm water in the middle of winter isn’t just relaxing—it’s also excellent for circulation, muscle recovery, and your overall mood. In January, a hot outdoor bath is incredibly revitalizing. The contrast between the cold air and the warm water is energizing and downright delightful. And since our precast concrete pools are covered with a 2 mm membrane—the thickest on the market!—you can use your pool year-round without worrying about damage.
Install a suitable heating system
Heating is the foundation of your winter spa project. Without it, your pool remains… a pool on pause. The good news is that for a small pool, the options are varied and often more accessible than you might think.
Possible solutions
Heat pump: Very popular for its stability and energy efficiency. It heats the water gradually but consistently. It’s an excellent choice if you want to keep the pool at temperature throughout the cold season. We even offer a great model.
Electric heater: Heats up faster but can use more energy. Ideal if you heat “on demand” for a few sessions per week.
Gas heater: Extremely effective when you want a quick temperature boost, even in very cold weather. However, operating costs may be slightly higher depending on usage.
Hybrid systems: Some owners combine a heat pump + gas heater to optimize cost and flexibility.
Recommended temperature
For spa-style use, the ideal range is usually 97°F to 103°F. Below 95°F, the water feels more “warm” than truly relaxing. Above 104°F, it’s not recommended for health or equipment.
A simple tip: if you don’t plan to use it daily, keep the water at a maintenance temperature (around 86–90°F) and increase it the day before you plan to use it.
Add spa accessories
This is where your pool officially shifts from “pool” to “winter spa.” Accessories aren’t mandatory, but they completely change the experience.
Massage jets
Installing hydrotherapy jets or a massage module turns each session into real muscle recovery time. Jets can be:
fixed or directional,
gentle or powerful,
installed on the walls or through an integrated bench.
If you don’t have built-in jets, add-on systems exist that don’t require redoing your plumbing.
LED lighting
Winter means early sunsets. Lighting becomes essential for both safety and ambiance. Submersible LEDs, perimeter light strips, or app-controlled lighting create a deeply relaxing atmosphere.
Bonus tip: dimmable lights or warm-tone lighting (amber, gold) really enhance the spa atmosphere. All Bayto Pools include LED lighting—we’ve thought of everything!
Water features
A small waterfall, wall fountain, or sheet-of-water effect adds:
a soothing sound,
a luxurious feel,
a beautiful movement that brings the water to life.
Even in winter, these features work perfectly if your system is designed for the cold, and they add a magical touch!
Protect and insulate the pool
Heating water is good. Keeping it warm is even better. Insulation and protective features reduce heat loss, directly improving energy efficiency… and comfort.
Insulating covers
A thermal cover (or floating insulating cover) is the first thing to consider. It acts like a coat over the water and reduces evaporation—the main cause of heat loss.
Some covers are specifically designed for winter: thicker, more resistant, and frost-friendly. We recommend our winter cover—it’s easy to use and very safe!
Wind protection
Wind drastically increases heat loss. Installing windbreak panels, hedges, or decorative partitions can make a surprising difference.
Less wind = less heat loss = more stable water temperature!
Perimeter insulation
If you can insulate the pool’s exterior walls—especially for semi-inground or concrete pools—it’s a significant advantage. Structural insulation helps maintain heat even when temperatures drop.
CReate a warm, inviting space around the pool
The spa experience isn’t only about the water. The surrounding space plays a huge role. In winter, you want a cozy, safe, and inviting atmosphere.
Outdoor fireplaces
A wood-burning or gas fireplace, placed at a safe distance, transforms the area. It adds warmth, soft lighting, and becomes a natural gathering place.
It’s also perfect for warming up when stepping out of the water!
Comfortable furniture
Choose materials suited for winter:
cold-resistant chairs,
waterproof cushions,
thick blankets,
weather-resistant outdoor rugs.
A well-designed relaxation zone extends the spa experience and makes everything more comfortable.
Winter plants and décor
Even in winter, your yard can look beautiful. Add potted evergreens, decorative branches, lanterns, string lights, or privacy screens.
The result is always stunning—a winter version of your yard that feels intentional, stylish, and inviting.
Maintain the water during winter
A heated pool in winter requires slightly different maintenance, but nothing complicated. In fact, the small size of the pool makes it easier.
Proper products
Use products formulated for low temperatures. You should still monitor:
pH,
alkalinity,
disinfectant (chlorine or bromine).
Water balance changes more slowly in winter, so check regularly but avoid overdosing.
Filtration and circulation
Hot water must circulate and be filtered to stay clear. Filtration time should match the water temperature. Generally, the warmer the water, the longer the filtration.
Prevent equipment from freezing
A well-designed system includes antifreeze safety features, but you should also:
ensure the pump is functioning correctly,
maintain minimum water circulation,
check exposed pipes.
The goal is to keep everything stable during intense cold spells.
